What's the Weight? - I Can Be a Scientist | Week 3
How do scientists measure and compare the weight of different objects?
What's the Weight? is the third unit in the I Can Be a Scientist curriculum series. Throughout this week, students explore the concepts of weight, gravity, measurement, and comparison through hands-on investigations and scientific discovery.
Children learn that bigger doesn't always mean heavier and discover how scientists use scales and other measuring tools to compare objects and collect accurate information. Along the way, students practice making predictions, recording observations, and using evidence to support their conclusions.
The featured Build a Balance Scale STEAM Challenge allows students to construct their own working balance scale and test a variety of household objects to determine which are heavier, lighter, or equal in weight. Through experimentation, children experience scientific measurement firsthand while learning about gravity, matter, mass, and observation.
In addition to science investigations, this packet includes differentiated literacy and math activities, a Heavy vs. Light Painting art project, sensory exploration, family challenges, and extension activities designed to reinforce scientific thinking through play and experimentation.
