Tools & Rules of Science is the second unit in the I Can Be a Scientist curriculum series. Throughout this week, students discover the tools scientists use to observe, measure, investigate, record information, and conduct experiments safely.
Children learn how tools such as microscopes, magnifying glasses, rulers, scales, thermometers, pipettes, magnets, and science notebooks help scientists explore the world around them. They also discover why safety goggles, careful procedures, and using the correct tool for the job are important parts of every investigation.
The featured Science Tool Belt STEAM Challenge encourages children to create and wear their own collection of science tools while learning how each tool is used. Throughout the week, students practice observation, measurement, recording information, and scientific thinking through hands-on activities and investigations.
In addition to science exploration, this packet includes differentiated literacy and math activities, a marbled art project using pipettes, a water investigation sensory station, family games, and extension activities designed to reinforce scientific skills through play.
