My 5 Senses at Work

Our five senses—sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—help us explore the world around us and give doctors important clues about how our bodies work. In this hands-on lesson, children will learn how the eyes see, the ears hear, the nose smells, the tongue tastes, and the skin feels. Through playful experiments and sensory-rich activities, young learners will discover how their senses help them stay safe, make choices, and understand their environment.

"My 5 Senses at Work" introduces early learners to the incredible job each sense does every day. Children will compare different sounds, feel textures, match scents, describe flavors, and notice how their eyes help them spot details—all while pretending to be mini-doctors using their senses to solve simple health mysteries. This fun and interactive science activity supports observation skills, language development, and body awareness, making it a perfect foundation for future STEM learning.

In the STEAM Spotlight

In this fun and interactive 5 Senses Spotlight activity, each child receives a worksheet with five circles representing the colors of Skittles: red, yellow, green, purple, and orange. Students start by coloring each circle to match the Skittle colors, helping reinforce color recognition. Then, they receive one Skittle of each color to taste, smell, observe, listen to (as they chew), and feel. For each color, children record their sensory observations—what the Skittle tastes, smells, sounds, looks, and feels like—developing their descriptive language and sensory awareness. This hands-on activity is perfect for exploring the five senses in a delicious, memorable way.
